How to Export Eight Sleep HRV to Apple Health

Updated August 2026 · Takes about 2 minutes

Eight Sleep does not export HRV to Apple Health. Its native Apple Health integration writes sleep stages, sleep duration, and heart rate — but it omits heart rate variability entirely. There is no setting that turns it on.

To get Eight Sleep HRV into Apple Health you need a third-party app. Nocturne reads your nights from your own Eight Sleep account and writes the HRV into Apple Health, including a backfill of your full history and an automatic sync every morning.

Does Eight Sleep sync HRV to Apple Health?

No. This is the single most common point of confusion, because Eight Sleep does have an Apple Health integration and it does measure HRV — it simply doesn't connect the two. Here is exactly what the native integration does and doesn't write:

MetricEight Sleep → Apple Health
Sleep stages (core, deep, REM, awake)Yes
Sleep durationYes
Heart rateYes
Heart rate variability (HRV)No
Resting heart rateNo
Respiratory rateNo

Your HRV is visible in the Eight Sleep app each morning, so the Pod is clearly measuring it. It just never reaches Apple Health — which means anything downstream of Apple Health never sees it. For a fuller breakdown, see does Eight Sleep sync with Apple Health.

Why doesn't Eight Sleep export HRV?

Eight Sleep has never published a reason. It isn't a hardware limitation — the Pod derives HRV from the same ballistocardiography it uses for heart rate and respiratory rate, and surfaces the number in its own app and sleep score. The Apple Health integration simply omits the metric.

The practical consequence is that people who bought a Pod partly to stop wearing a tracker to bed end up wearing an Apple Watch anyway, purely to feed HRV to their recovery app. That's the gap this page is about closing.

What are your options for getting Eight Sleep HRV into Apple Health?

There are four realistic approaches, and they differ a lot in effort and in what you end up with:

OptionAutomatic?Historical dataBest for
Nocturne
iPhone app
Yes — every morning Full backfill Anyone who wants their HRV in Apple Health without thinking about it
Developer APIs
(e.g. Sahha and similar platforms)
Depends on what you build Depends Developers building their own product on normalized health data — not an end-user solution
Manual entry
into Apple Health
No Only what you type Spot-checking a single night; impractical daily
Wear an Apple Watch
to bed
Yes No People who don't mind sleeping in a watch — measures the watch's HRV, not the Pod's

The last one is worth calling out: wearing a watch doesn't export your Eight Sleep HRV, it replaces it with a different measurement from a different sensor. If you want the Pod's own numbers in Apple Health, a bridge app is the only route.

How to export Eight Sleep HRV to Apple Health, step by step

STEP 1

Get Nocturne

Download Nocturne on the App Store. It's free to start — seven nights of syncing, no time limit.

STEP 2

Sign in with your Eight Sleep account

Use the same email and password you use for the Eight Sleep app. Your credentials go directly to Eight Sleep; Nocturne runs no servers of its own.

STEP 3

Allow Apple Health access

iOS will ask you to grant write access for HRV — plus heart rate, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep stages if you want the full export. You must tap Allow, or nothing can be written.

STEP 4

Export your nights

Tap Export on any night, or open Bulk Export to backfill a date range — or your entire history — at once. Nights already in Apple Health are skipped, so you'll never create duplicates.

STEP 5

Turn on automatic morning sync

Enable Auto Sync in Settings and each new night is written to Apple Health on its own, so the data is waiting before you open your recovery app.

After the first export, open Apple Health → Browse → Heart → Heart Rate Variability and you'll see the new readings attributed to Nocturne.

Should you export the full time series or the nightly average?

Nocturne can write HRV two different ways, and the choice matters more than it sounds:

If you're unsure, use the full time series — it contains strictly more information, and you can always look at the nightly average anyway. Curious what the numbers mean? See Eight Sleep HRV explained.

Do I still need to wear an Apple Watch to bed?

No — and for most people this is the whole point. Once Eight Sleep HRV is in Apple Health, downstream apps can't tell the difference between it and watch-sourced HRV; they read the same Apple Health data type. You get overnight recovery metrics with nothing on your wrist.

Does this work with Bevel, Athlytic, and other recovery apps?

Yes. Bevel, Athlytic, Training Today, HRV4Training and similar apps all calculate readiness and recovery from Apple Health. They pick up the HRV automatically once it's there — no configuration needed on their side.

One practical note: most recovery apps need several nights before their baseline is meaningful. Using Bulk Export to backfill your history gives them a running start instead of making you wait weeks.

Is it safe to sign in with my Eight Sleep account?

Nocturne operates no backend. Your credentials go straight to Eight Sleep, the session token is kept only in your device's encrypted Keychain, and sleep data moves from Eight Sleep's API into Apple Health on your device — nowhere else. There is no analytics SDK, no tracking, and no account with us to create. Full details in the privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Will exporting create duplicate HRV entries in Apple Health?

No. Nocturne tracks which nights it has already written and skips them, so re-running an export or a bulk backfill is safe.

How far back can I export?

Your entire Eight Sleep history. Bulk Export can target a date range or backfill everything at once, so years of nights can land in Apple Health in one pass. Automatic sync deliberately handles only recent nights, leaving deep history as something you choose to run.

Can I export other metrics besides HRV?

Yes — heart rate, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep stages can all be written, or you can keep it to HRV only. Bed and room temperature are shown in the app for analysis but aren't written to Apple Health, since it has no matching data type.

Can I remove the data later?

Yes. Nocturne can delete everything it wrote to Apple Health from its settings, and you can also remove it from the Health app directly.

Does this need my Pod to be online?

Nocturne reads finished sessions from your Eight Sleep account, so it works wherever you have an internet connection. A night usually becomes available within about an hour of getting out of bed.
